Someone paid an equivalent of $2000 for this in 1914 [Restoration]
This machine has the most odd combination of functions I've ever come across. It was made in 1914 by the F. Bissell Company of Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. and combines a vacuum, grinder, buffer, blower, and pulley. The tool is so old that this would have been one of the first introductions to an electric motor that a household would have had.
These are quite rare and I had a very difficult internal struggle with removing the unique decal and having it recreated. The original decal contained only a partial image of the "Bissell Frog" and with no high quality images of the full decal online, I was stuck until I came across an old F. Bissell Company catalogue with a large image of a frog on the fron...

Why Did They Stop Making These? [Restoration]
Просмотров 1,5 млн2 месяца назад
This 1930s Leland Electric Co. throttle variable speed and direction electric motor is one of the coolest tools I have restored. The restoration was fairly straight forward, but the mechanics of how this works were the most interesting. I give a quick explanation near the end of the video on how I believe this works, but if you specifically know, please leave a comment below. The tag was in the...
1929 Gun Wrench [Patent Remake]
Просмотров 271 тыс.3 месяца назад
Possibly the best example of something everyone wants but no one needs. I came across this patent for a pistol grip wrench while randomly scrolling through an antique tool group where someone made a post saying they found a production model of this wrench made by the Rex Engineering Co.. Immediately intrigued, I messaged the person who had it and asked if they wanted to sell it, to which they n...
Rare Bow Chainsaw [Restoration]
Просмотров 727 тыс.5 месяцев назад
This restoration is on the first gasoline-powered one-man bow chainsaw ever produced. It was made by Precision Part Ltd. of Montreal, Canada in the 1940s. It took me 5 years to find 3 separate dilapidated chainsaw motors, 2 bow bars, 1 straight bar, and 2 chains just to source all the parts to restore one function chainsaw. Unfortunately, the most complete motor happened to also be completely s...
Gizmortiser [Restoration]

This restoration is on a 1912 door lock mortising machine called the Champion Mortiser by J. Leukart Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, USA. The original patent can be seen here: patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/c3/17/6c/8079b652ead2f8/US1037939.pdf Mortising machines are among some of my favourite tools to restore as they all seem to have high levels of gizmosity. The amount of mechanical...
Round Knife Cutter [Restoration]
Просмотров 492 тыс.6 месяцев назад
This restoration is on a model "M" round knife cloth cutter made by The Wolf Machine Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. The company had been in business since 1888 and still makes these types of products today. My best estimate places this machine being made in the early 1950s. This tool made for a very interesting restoration as I came across several parts and problems I've never seen before. M...

I used to work in the Garment District in NYC, when it existed. The cloth would be laid out on 50' long tables with the layers of cloth 12-18" high. I cutter like this but much taller would be run thru the pile of cloth based on a paper pattern on top. Each time it was turned on, the honing stones would run down and up the blade to sharpen it each time. 25cps??? when was that?

Back in the early 1970's when I was at school i had a summer job working in a printers. They had four colour offset Litho printers that were driven by a variable speed drive working on exactly this principle If I recall correctly in the 50kW range. The brush gear was rotated by a motorised reversible worm drive which was visible through a perspex window in the motor housing.

run a hose extension on the bag end, have it sat somewhere near a multi pulley, put it on sliders so it can reach each pulley, run vacuum hose to an outside bag system or to a bin with an exhaust filter

A vacuum would make sense for a shop. You need vacuums in a shape but what doesn't make sense is having the vacuum dirt shoot upwards into a bag vs sideways/down. So i don't think that is ment to be a vacuum but a blower. The design of it makes much more sense to be a blower not a vacuum with the orientation unless it is supposed to be turned and layed down at different direction based on current use but with its shape and wheels that doesn't seem to make sense. So i don't think that is supposed to be a vacuum but actually a blower.

They didn’t! They’re just a little harder to recreate now. That looks like it’s using DC brushes to power the motor and the lever gives it forward/reverse polarity. You can do the same work with an AC synchronous motor and a motor drive! It can also be externally mounted as a control station for your convenience and to allow you to stay away from the moving belt while changing speeds and direction. What a cool motor though, that’s awesome.
